Second Log Processing Line for existing Veneer Plant

  • Stem bucking, log debarking (Nicholson) and high speed block sorting by diameter

  • Upgraded Allen-Bradley PLC 5/40E with three QB modules

  • Two step feeders controlled by linear positioners

  • Two Panelmates used for motor control, diagnostics and system configuration

  • Extensive use of Block I/O modules to reduce field wiring costs

  • Supplied all control equipment including two operator booths

  • Several VFD’s and soft-starters controlled by PLC

  • Project management and mechanical design by Stolberg Engineering Ltd.

Dryer #2 Controls 

  • Upgraded an existing Dryer (controlled with hardwired controls) to a new Mitsubishi PLC

  • Mitsubishi HMI touch-screens used for operator interface

  • Dryer infeed and outfeed controls were consolidated with dryer controls into one PLC program

 

Log Deck PLC Program Revisions

  • Existing PLC program was revised to improve the operation of the Log Deck and Cut-Off Saw.

  • Cut-Off Saw accuracy was improved and throughput was increased by up to 25%

 

Dryer #2 Accumulator

  • PLC programming and documentation for a new accumulator installed on the Dryer infeed.

Veneer Plant, Nanaimo, BC

  • Retrofit existing Lathe Charger with hydraulic servo valves and QB modules controlling nine (9) hydraulic positioners, resulting in a 20% increase in throughput and much smoother operation

  • Installed new X-Y laser scanning system and Halco optimizing software on Lathe Charger

  • New Catch-up tray control program to increase throughput

  • Upgrade two (2) existing Allen-Bradley PLC 2/30 processors on Lathe and Green End to a single Allen-Bradley PLC 5/40E processor for entire Veneer Mill

  • New touch-screen Operator Interface in Lathe Booth complete with Veneer Peeling Line Interface software

  • Production and downtime reporting using Microsoft Excel and RS Linx

  • Based on a Windows NT platform, a new Ethernet network was used to connect PLC, X-Y computer, Programming / Maintenance computer and Operator Interface computer.
