Client: California Redwood Company.
(ex Simpson Timber Company)
Korbel, California
Project: From concept to commissioning, this 14-month redwood and fir planer mill project started with the removal of all the existing mechanical equipment.  Pacificon was responsible for the design, documentation, programming, fabrication, supply and on-site commissioning of all control system equipment including PLC panels, operator consoles and junction boxes.

Details: A partial list of equipment and documentation supplied.
  • 3 Controllogix PLC’s were used in the Planer Infeed Area, Trim-Sort Line and
    Package Handling areas
  • 2 additional ControlLogix PLC’s were used for specialized motion control for
servo drives and hydraulic linear positioners
  • 2950 I/O points in nine 17-slot racks & 18 Flex I/O drops on Ethernet I/O network interfaced to consoles, panels, MCC’s
  • 34 VFD's were controlled by an embedded Ethernet interface module in each VFD
  • 150 standard drives were each controlled by a DeviceNet E3 Plus module
  • 10 MCC's interfaced to PLC via 10 EtherNet to DeviceNet (EN2DN) converters
  • 7 Panelview 400 Plus HMI’s with Ethernet interface for local status and alarm messages
  • An RSView32 operator interface was used for sorter setup and troubleshooting
  • Controllogix PLC communicated to the CNM Linear Optimizer via ControlNet interface
  • 600+ AutoCAD drawings

Notes: A new "Skip-a-Lug" feature was added to provide an empty lug for Cut-in-Two Board Trim Solutions.

Several high-performance servo motors on a SERCOS network were used to control the “soft coupled” TRIM-SORT lugged transfers. The 3 Grader Stations were also controlled with "Soft-Coupled" servo drives.

A fully automated Tray unloading feature was provided to automatically sequence loads into position for the high-speed lumber stacker.

The high-speed lumber stacker was controlled by a linear positioner for the hoist and a servo motor for the forks. The servo motor controlled forks was a new design from CNM that we successfully commissioned on-site.

The client had an existing Inventory Tracking and Shift Reporting system they wanted to retain. We provided all the nessesary communication for this in-house system.
