Project: Upgrade the two Trim/Sort lines by replacing the two existing Texas Instruments PLC systems with two Controllogix PLC systems.  Two new Comact Grade Optimizers were also installed at the same time.

Details: A Controllogix PLC was used to replace the existing Texas Instruments PLC system for each of the two Trim/Sort lines. Each ControlLogix PLC interfaced to the following equipment on each Trim Line:
  • new COMACT Grade Optimizer.
  • four linear positioners on primary and secondary trim saws.
  • new PosiLock fence with SICAM Fence Position Verifier.
  • AutoLog Inkjet labelling system
  • several VFD's. The multiple lugged chains were "soft-coupled" together using VFD's and controlled by the Controllogix PLC thus eliminating the need for mechanical couplings.
  • an HMI was provided for setup, monitoring and troubleshooting of the system.

Notes: The customer was reluctant to install a second Controllogix PLC system as they had an unpleasant experience with their first installation by another firm. We suggested that we could make the Controllogix processor look similar to the TI PLC it was replacing and that the site electricians were already familiar with.

The installation and commissioning for each Trim/Sort Line was completed separately and in the time allocated while allowing the other Trim/Sort line to continue to operate.

With all the new technology, the electricians were were trained to be able to be self sufficient in a short period of time.

The client had an existing shift reporting systems then wanted to reuse. We provided the nessesary interface for this RSVide32 system.
